Always good stuff in the Psalms! In my preparation this week a point that really spoke to me was Psalm 40:2, “He also brought me up out of a horrible pit, Out of the miry clay, And set my feet upon a rock, And established my steps.”
David is speaking about how God has cared for him. How God had taken him out of places where he was just mired down. That is an interesting word, mire. Miry clay is that which will suck you in and stop you from going forward. A miry situation is the same way. Some thing or some circumstance that you can’t get yourself out of. And, too often, the Christian finds himself or herself in that place, sometimes intentionally and sometimes not.
You and I can get mired down in circumstances like bad financial decisions, drug or alcohol misuse, improper relationships, worldly thinking, and so on. You get stuck. You feel overwhelmed or helpless. You get confused. So often, we try our best to get out of these situations but only end up making them worse. Notice what David said, “He also brought me up out of a horrible pit, Out of the miry clay…” It is God who brings you out; who can bring you out, no matter what the situation.
What is it that has you stuck? How many times have you tried to change it? It is time to look to the Lord. Admit that you cannot change, or change the circumstance. Admit that you have failed.
Paul exclaims out of this same frustration and helplessness, “Who will deliver me from this body of death?” The answer? Jesus Christ. The same one who saved you in the first place is the one who can deliver you now!
